Built in 1908, this deco-style hotel in Union Square is either "quaint", "weathered" or "depressing", depending on the taste of the guest, but most say the rooms are "small" and the parking expensive; similarly, some reviewers regard the neighborhood's homeless population as "aggressive" and the management "difficult to deal with", while others find a "perfect" location and a "friendly" staff.

Large room with upscale modern decor, great location.

I was pleasantly surprised. My room was ultra modern and very large. The location was fabulous and the staff was the best! I would most certainly recommend this hotel to my friends and will stay here again in the future. ...read more

The restaurant in the hotel was the only half decent thing about it.
Everything else.

The staff was horribly rude and unaccommodating. The entire hotel was undergoing renovations and parts were blocked off the elevator wouldn't work. They almost gave my car away to someone else in the valet parking lot. From start to finish this was the worst hotel experience I have ever had. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to my worst enemy. ...read more

The hotel was completely run down.

The hotel was just about to undergo a serious, much needed renovation effort. Unfortunately I got into the hotel right before that renovation happened. Well, actually the renovation had already started. The general areas of the hotel were dirty and run down. Dust was piling up. This hotel was an embarrassment. ...read more

Hard to say but it had great closet space.
It was under renovation, the hotel loked so dirty.

It was difficult to find a parking space, you better have forty bucks for valet, and you need it! The elevator was an awful site, it seemed it was about to fall apart. The rooms had an old interior look and bathroom was very small but it was a one night stay, I wouldn't recommend it for more than one night. ...read more

Hard to say.
The value of this hotel was poor. Maxwell is under construction. It was beyond loud. The elevator -never available. Several things broken in room.

It was not a very good experience staying there when it is still the Maxwell and is under construction.

The location was perfect for me. The hotel has beautiful architecture. It is under going renovation. That didn't adversely affect my visit.
Nothing I didn't like.

Beautiful hotel. Excellent location.

It was close to Union Square.
The room was small, the bathroom was very disappointing.

I would not stay in this hotel again.

Its location was terrific. The staff was friendly and helpful. It's quaint.
It needs some serious upgrades, which would do tremendous amount quickly to improve its appeal.

Great, centrally located hotel in heart of Union Square. The hotel's claimed valet parking doesn't really exist and my car almost was towed in the 5 minutes I was awaiting some assistance. The hotel is charming underneath its worn-out surface and by adding new carpet, non-taped elevators, and new beds, this place would be an instant gem. It didn't ruin the stay b/c the location was great; the staff was friendly; it was comfortable; and it served the basic needs... but there are a few things for Maxwell to get in shape for it to be a great place to stay. ...read more

The staff was very friendly and helpful. I give them A+.
Hotel is old and seems shabby.

The hotel is old and shabby. Location is so convenient. So did not spend much time in the room. We were awakened by a loud noise many times, which was the above
AC dripping on the window ledge, but sounded like someone was doing carpentry work. The hotel staff was so helpful and cheerful. They were just great. ...read more
